Low intensity ultrasound stimulates biological activity of aerobic activated sludge

摘要: This work aims to explore a procedure to improve biological wastewater treatment efficiency using low intensity ultrasound. The aerobic activated sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant was used as the experimental material. Oxygen uptake rate (OUR) of the activated sludge (AS) was determined to indicate the changes of AS activity stimulated by ultrasound at 35 kHz for 0 40 min with ultrasonic intensities of 0 1.2 W/cm. The highest OUR was observed at the ultrasonic intensity of 0.3 W/cm and an irradiation period of 10 min; more than 15% increase was achieved immediately after sonication. More significantly, the AS activity stimulated by ultrasound could last 24 h after sonication, and the AS activity achieved its peak value within 8 h after sonication, or nearly 100% higher than the initial level after sonication. Therefore, to improve the wastewater treatment efficiency of bioreactors, ultrasound with an intensity of 0.3 W/cm could be employed to irradiate a part of the AS in the bioreactor for 10 min every 8 h.

Development and application of some renovated technologies for municipal wastewater treatment in China

摘要: China has been experiencing fast economic development in recent decades at the cost of serious environmental deterioration. Wastewater discharge, especially municipal wastewater discharge, and non-point pollution sources are becoming the major water pollution source and research focus. Great efforts have been made on water pollution control and a number of renovated technologies and processes for municipal wastewater treatment and reclamation as well as non-point pollution control have been developed and applied in China. This paper discusses the development and application of the appropriate technologies, including natural treatment systems, anaerobic biological treatment, biofilm reactors and wastewater reclamation technologies, for water pollution control in the country.

Challenges of a feasible route towards sustainability in environmental protection

摘要: Anaerobic processes for treatment of low and high strength wastewaters and solid wastes constitute the core method in the natural biological mineralization (NBM) treatment concept. When adequately combined with the complementary NBM-systems and modern clean water saving practices in wastewater collection and transport, they represent a feasible route to sustainable environmental protection (EP), in essence even towards a more sustainable society. Despite the development and implementation of modern high rate Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment (AnWT-) systems and complementary innovative NBM-processes, the considerable progress made since the seventies in fundamental insights in microbiology, biochemistry and process technology, still numerous challenging improvements in the NBM-field can be realized. This contribution is mainly based on the insights attained from wide ranging literature evaluations and the results of experimental research conducted by numerous PhD students who participated in our group over the last four decades. An attempt is made here to identify major facets on which an improved insight can, and consequently should, be obtained in order to accomplish more optimal operation and design of various types of Anaerobic Degradation (AnDeg-) processes.

流化床生物反应器在污水处理中的应用研究和进展综述 Review

污水处理是保护环境和人类健康的重要过程。目前,最经济有效的污水处理方法为生物处理法,如运行时间较长的活性污泥法。然而,随着人口的增长,对新型高效污水处理技术的需求越来越迫切,流态化技术虽然已展示出能够提高许多化学与生化处理过程的效率,但尚未在大型污水处理过程中得到广泛的应用。循环流化床生物反应器 (CFBBR) 污水处理技术的研究始于加拿大西安大略大学,在该技术中,载体颗粒表面会形成一层含细菌与其他微生物的生物膜,并在反应器中呈流化状态;流态化固有的良好混合和质量传递特性,使得该技术在生活污水和工业污水处理过程中均具优势。实验室阶段和中试阶段的研究均证实了CFBBR 可去除污水中90% 以上的碳源、80%以上的氮源,且污泥产量少于活性污泥法的1/3。由于该技术的高效性,CFBBR 还可被用于传统方法难以处理的高有机碳污水处理,且具有占地面积小的优势。同时,CFBBR 在动态负荷试验 (进水量和进水浓度变化) 中也展现了良好的抗冲击和恢复性能。总的来说,CFBBR 是一种高效的污水处理方法,可在较短的水力停留时间和较小的反应器体积内处理更多的污水。此外,该反应器的紧凑设计将有助于在偏僻地区建造独立的污水处理系统。

Upgrade of three municipal wastewater treatment lagoons using a high surface area media

摘要: Lagoon-based municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are facing difficulties meeting the needs of rapid population growth as well as the more stringent requirements of discharge permits. Three municipal WWTPs were modified using a high surface area media with upgraded fine-bubble aeration systems. Performance data collected showed very promising results in terms of five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD ), ammonia (NH ) and total suspended solids (TSS) removal. Two-year average ammonia effluents were 4.1 mg·L for Columbia WWTP, 4 mg·L for Larchmont WWTP and 2.1 mg·L for Laurelville WWTP, respectively. Two- year average BOD effluents were 6.8, 4.9 and 2.7 mg·L , and TSS effluents were 15.0, 9.6 and 7.5 mg·L . The systems also showed low fecal coliform (FC) levels in their effluents.
